Building Committee

The Board of Fire Commissioners has formed an advisory committee to explore the long-term needs of the District's headquarter station at 1 Long Pond Road.  The committee is assessing the feasibility of remodeling the current fire station, rebuilding at 1 Long Pond Rd or building a replacement station on an alternate site. The committee is made up of 10 members representing the fire district, fire department and district residents.

Why is the Study Needed?

The current station has experienced rapid deterioration since the flooding events of 2017 and 2019.  The soil that the building foundation sits on has eroded leaving voids underneath the structure. The District has incurred significant repair costs because the unsupported infrastructure is shifting and breaking. 

Expanded facilities are being considered because the current space does not adequately support today's operations. When the building was built 40+ years ago, the station supported a volunteer crew. The station must now support a full-time crew and meet the health and safety regulations impsoed since the mid-1980's. The current facility does not meet these requirements.

An alternate location is being considered in response to a request from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to relocate the station outside of the FEMA flood zone.  

Building Committee Objectives

(1)  Gather information about whether the redesign or expansion of the current facility is operationally and financially feasible given the following considerations:

• The stability of the current site and the structural integrity of the building, both of which have been compromised by erosion

• The DEC's request to relocate critical infrastructure outside of Special Flood Hazard Area. 

• The need for co-ed facilities, decontamination zones and administrative space compliant with regulations and codes

(2)  Gather information about the cost and operational impact of consolidating two stations into one newly constructed facility at an alternate location given the following considerations:

• Impact on response times 

• Ability to secure federal, state and local funding for pre-construction engineering studies, architectural designs and construction 

• The ongoing maintenance costs of a larger station

The role of the building committee is to gather information and report learnings back to the board of fire commissioners. The committee can not make final decisions, obligate the district or it's residents, or take official action on behalf of the district.
